Origin of Monterey Movie Tours

Beginning in 1999, founder Doug Lumsden started taking people on a scenic tour of Carmel, Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Pebble Beach. In 2001, Lumsden was asked to provide a very special tour featuring Play Misty For Me, starring Clint Eastwood.  The tour celebrated the 30th anniversary of the film.  It was also the start of Monterey Movie Tours. Doug realized that more than 200 movies had been filmed in the Monterey Peninsula area.  He decided that adding those films to his tour would provide a wonderful historic perspective to Carmel by-the-Sea.  By 2003 he had built a 33 passenger touring bus that provided monitors and digital sound and Monterey Movie Tours began.

What to Expect on Monterey Movie Tours

Climb on board Doug’s beautifully designed tour bus and get ready to the magnificent scenery of Carmel by-the-Sea, Monterey and Monterey Cannery Row, 17 mile drive, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach and the beautiful Pebble Beach golf course. While you are enjoying the views, you’ll also get an insider’s historic look at the area. For example, as your drive along Monterey Cannery Row your monitor will be showing you scenes from “Clash By Night” where you’ll see old fishing boats hauling in sardines.  And you’ll see the fish being processed in the local canneries.  As you look outside your window you’ll still be able to see some pilings rising from the Bay. Those used to be the base of the canneries you see on the Monterey Movie Tours film clip.

Are you a “Trekkie”? Then you’ll be fascinated by the Monterey Aquarium, which was the fictitious “Crustacean Institute” in “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

And did you know that each hole on Spyglass Hill golf course was named for either a place or a character in Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island”?  As you pass through Pebble Beach, Doug will share historic insights about the area and how the movies played a part.
