Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula History
CHOMP Monterey was founded in 1934 as a 30-bed general community hospital and was named Peninsula Community Hospital. In the 1950’s Samuel F.B. Morse donated 22 prime, pine filled acres in the Del Monte Forest for a new hospital site. On June 28, 1962 the new Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula officially opened. It was a 100 bed, 210,000 square foot facility and the only community hospital in the country to offer all private rooms. The magnificent new facility, designed by world famous architect Edward Durell Stone, has won state and national awards for architectural excellence.
In 1971 CHOMP Monterey added a dome over the Fountain Court, and 72 more rooms that included a mental health facility. In 1983 42,000 more square feet are added to the main building, providing outpatient facilities, educational rooms and business offices. In 1988 a new Outpatient Surgery Center opened. The Outpatient Surgery Center now handles more than half of all the surgeries at Community Hospital. In 1991 the hospital expanded the Rehabilitation Services department. In 2004, the hospital laid out site plans to add the Forest Pavilion which include 120 more beds, and the South Pavilion which adds another 135,000 square feet and centralized the critical care department and related services.
In 2004 the Community Hospital opened the Ryan Ranch Outpatient Campus, which includes a Sleep Disorders Center, a Diabetes and Nutrition Therapy program, the Community Imaging Center, another satellite laboratory, the Community Health and Hospice Resource Center, doctor’s offices, and administrative offices.
